Interviews at multinational companies and their global capability centres (GCCs) in India usually follow a set pattern. Knowing what each round is testing helps you prepare for the right things.
The rounds you can expect
- Online assessment: aptitude, coding or a domain test, often taken at home within a time limit.
- Technical interviews: one to three rounds on your core skills, such as coding, system design, accounting or analytics depending on the role.
- Hiring manager round: how you work, how you solve problems and whether you fit the team.
- HR discussion: salary expectations, notice period, location and joining date.
Some roles add a case study, a presentation or a take-home assignment. The job advert or recruiter will usually tell you.
Prepare stories, not just answers
Behavioural questions such as "Tell me about a time you disagreed with a colleague" are common at global employers. Use the STAR structure:
- Situation: the context, in one or two sentences.
- Task: what you needed to achieve.
- Action: what you did. Say "I", not "we".
- Result: what changed, with numbers where possible, and what you learnt.
Prepare five or six stories covering a success, a failure, a conflict, a tight deadline, leading without authority and learning something quickly. Most questions can be answered with one of them.
Technical rounds
- Revise the fundamentals listed in the job description first; interviewers usually start there.
- Think aloud. Interviewers want to see how you reason, not just the final answer.
- If you do not know something, say so and explain how you would find out. Guessing confidently and being wrong does more harm.
Salary and notice period questions
Expect to be asked about your current CTC, expected CTC and notice period. Research the typical pay for the role, and give a range you are genuinely happy with. Be honest about your notice period; many employers can wait 60 to 90 days for the right person, and some will ask whether a buyout is possible. Our guides on CTC and in-hand salary and notice periods explain both.
On the day
- For video interviews, test your camera, microphone and internet connection beforehand, and sit somewhere quiet with good light.
- Keep a copy of your resume and the job description open.
- Prepare two or three questions about the team, the work and how success is measured.
- Send a short thank-you email to the recruiter afterwards.
Genuine interviews are arranged by the company's recruiters, usually from the company's own email domain. If an "interview" is held only on WhatsApp or Telegram, or ends with a request for money, it is a scam.
