Your first job is the hardest to get, because you have little experience to show. The good news is that large employers in India hire thousands of freshers every year, through more routes than campus placements alone.
Know the routes in
- Campus placements: companies visit colleges and hire final-year students. If your college has them, prepare early and do not skip the pre-placement talks.
- Off-campus drives: many companies run national hiring drives open to graduates from any college, usually with an online test first. They are announced on the company's careers site.
- Graduate, trainee and apprentice programmes: structured one- or two-year programmes with training. Search for "graduate", "trainee", "apprentice" or "associate" roles.
- Internships: a good internship often turns into a full-time offer. Many employers convert interns first before hiring from outside.
Build proof of your skills
Without work experience, recruiters look for evidence that you can do the job:
- Projects: two or three solid projects beat ten half-finished ones. Explain the problem, your approach and the result.
- A portfolio or GitHub profile for technical and design roles, kept tidy, with a short readme for each project.
- Certifications from recognised platforms, but only where they match the job. They support your skills; they do not replace them.
- Competitions and hackathons show that you can work under time pressure and in a team.
Prepare for the online assessment
Most fresher hiring starts with an online test: quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, verbal ability and, for technical roles, coding. Practise timed tests every week in your final year. Accuracy matters as much as speed, because some tests deduct marks for wrong answers.
Apply widely, but apply well
- Shortlist 20 to 30 companies whose work interests you and follow their careers pages.
- Tailor your resume for each type of role; see our resume guide.
- Ask seniors and alumni for referrals. A referral does not guarantee a job, but it can get your resume seen.
- Track every application in a simple spreadsheet so you can follow up and prepare in time.
Watch out for fake fresher offers
Scammers target freshers with offers that ask for "registration", "training" or "laptop" fees. Genuine employers never charge you to apply or to join. Read our guide to spotting fake job offers.
